At What Point Should You Stop Chasing Strength?

Let's not get it twisted, athletes need to be strong, but at what point is chasing strength not the goal?

At some point someone is strong enough to play their sport and get on the field. Keir once said that these KPI are like a drivers license - they get you into the club but they don't guarantee you will get to dance with someone. Once someone has the requisite speed, power, strength, etc...improving it does not mean they will become all-star, or hall of fame level.

Take for instance the 40 yard dash. A WR cannot make it to the NFL with a 5.60 time. If they run a 4.60 they can make it. But running 4.30 or 4.20 does not mean they will be all pro or hall of fame. Look around the league for proof of this.

So what is strong enough?

It all depends on who's data you trust. RIP Uncle Kurt Hester and in his Cheeky Mid Weeky on July 13, 2025 he talked about coaches who lie about data. It happens. I have seen it too. Coaches at Towson calling a 1/4 squat a good back squat, not to mention their were hands on the bar crane style. Or the 4 hand bench press spotting style where it is "all you"

Here is our data at Towson:

Since coaches cook the books and lie about things many coaches do not know what is strong enough. Click here to download what is strong enough to play in the FCS football during a time that we played JMU and Delaware. Yes, those now FBS teams (JMU being ranked in the FBS top 25) were always on the schedule for us at Towson.

These numbers were gathered by taking the 1RM of all the players in the 2 deep.

  • FMS was the 21 point scale

  • BF% was from Skyndex

  • SIN BRD was inches of broad jump

  • CONT was the average score from 3 reps broad jump

  • Next metrics was the SL take off to DL land broad jump

  • SQJ was squat jump with 3 sec pause

  • CMJ was vert with arms

  • PQ was square root of BW times Square root of CMJ

  • SL take off to DL land vert

  • RSI from an 18" drop

  • SL RSL to DL Land from 9" drop

  • 2 point stance 10 yard accel with 1 yard start

  • Fly 10

  • MPH from Catapult

  • 2 point stance 40 yard dash with 1 yard start behind laser

  • CON = 10 reps of Tribe Test

  • You can figure out the weight room stuff.

What are your thoughts? Is it high to you? Low? Let me know. Inside this we had All Americans and All Conference Players.
