How Werner Gunthor Trained to Win 3 World Championships

If you’re an S&C coach, or in fact anyone with access to an internet connection, you’ve probably spent some time going down YouTube rabbit holes. It’s the evening and you’ve sat down after dinner, and before you know it, it’s 3 am and you’re watching cats videos or some other random video on YouTube.

Well, before you got to the cat videos the algo (with its infinite wisdom) probably got in front of you as a strength coach and showed you some of the notorious Werner Günthör training compilations. We’ve all watched them, they’re as close as it gets to an S&C’s wet dream and you can see why; from the spectacular mullet/singlet combo to the ridiculously impressive athletic feats.

But don’t let that distract you from how successful Werner Günthör was. He is one of the top-performing shot putters of all time. A 3-time world champion and Olympic bronze medallist, Werner Günthör’s Swiss national record of 22.75m still stands today after over 30 years.

This historic training video is a unique insight into the preparation of a world-class athlete, and one of the finest practical examples of concepts popularised by renowned coaches like Anatoli Bondarchuk, Yuri Verkhoshansky, Giles Cometti and more. Throwers are some of the most explosive athletes out there. What’s even more amazing is some of the plyometrics that Werner is able to do despite his size.

Now, whilst this video isn’t a recommendation for you to blindly copy in the hope your athletes end up like Werner. There is a lot to take away from this video, in how the training is organised in order to achieve as much transfer as possible.

We’ve spoken about transfer and specificity before, and if you click here you can learn all about how you can develop better transfer for your athletes. If you want even more information on it then check out our member’s area. We also have a cheat sheet that covers exercise classification and how to know if your training really is that specific to the sport.

We also have a whole module on the transfer of training in our Fundamentals course. If you work in a team sport, then this course is the ideal holistic approach to make sure you are successful. Not only with your athletes, but in making sure you survive the wild west of S&C. With modules covering decision making and financial robustness you’ll be in a far better position than your peers.
